The Ateneo de Manila College Glee
Club is the oldest university choir in the Philippines. Its goal has always been to spread
Philippine faith and culture through excellence music. When the American Jesuits took over
the Ateneo in 1921, a boys choir was formed with Jose Mossessgeld Santiago as its
musical director. Unfortunately, that choir died a natural death a few years in its
existence. However, it was revied in 1932 when the Ateneo moved to its sprawling campus in
Loyola Heights. None other than the renowned stage director Fr. James Reuter S.J.
conducted the newly revived Glee Club.
In 1971,
the Glee Club became a mixed chorus. When Prof. Joel P. Navarro took over in
1979, the Glee Club began touring the Philippines , sharing its music to varied audiences.
Under the baton of Prof. Navarro, the choir won local and international awards. These
awards are First Place in the College Category in the National Music Competition for Young
Artists (1980), First Prize in the Folkloric Division and Third Prize in the Polyphonic
Division of the Festiva de Musica de Cantonigros in Spain (1989), Fifth Prize in the Guido
DArezzo in Italy (1989). The choir was also given public recognition and critical
honor as the best choir in the First International Chant Chorale in Nancy, France and in
the Ente Rassegne Musicale in Loreto, Italy (1989). The Glee Club also became the first
officially designated foreign choir to sing for the Holy Popes General Assembly in
Rome. It was also the official representative to the XVII Journades Internacionales del
Cant Coral a Barcelona (1983) and the Royal Pacific Exchange between Sacramento,
California and Manila (1986).
In 1989, the Glee Club was invited by
Filipino communities to perform in Japan, Jakarta and Guam. The extraordinary rapport
established with the Guam audience paved the way for return Engagements in 1990, 1991,
1993, 1996, 1997 and 1999. In 1992, the choir was placed under the leadership of Eudenice
Palaruan. Under his direction, the choir embarked on a North American Tour in 1992 and
1993. In 1994, Mr. Palaruan was granted a musical scholarship in Berlin and once again,
Prof. Navarro directed the choir. That year, the Glee Club embarked on its first
Philippine Tour performing in provinces like Iloilo, Cagayan, Davao, Cebu, Baguio, Dagupan
and Pampanga, among others. Later that year, the choir sang in the prestigious Miss
Universe Pageant, the Gawad Urian Awards Night and the Metro Manila Film Festival Awards
Night. In 1995, the choir performed in the Catholic Mass Media Awards. This was the
choirs second time to sing for the Holy Father as the Pope was visiting the
Philippines for the World Youth Day. It was also during this year that the choir visited
and performed in different Christian schools in Indonesia, Korea and Hong Kong.
Throughout the
year, the choir has performed in many concerts, recitals, government functions and other
engagements. In mid 1994, the Glee Club was approached by Mr. Lorie Taa and Ms. Pat
Castillo of Bookmark Philippines who wished to record a trilogy of choral CD albums which
would feature Philippine songs of history, faith and culture. Prof. Navarro and the Glee
Club readily agreed to do the albums. In December 1994, the first album, LANGIT was
released. The album features popular Filipino songs of praise. The second album, LAHI, was
released in September 1995. It featured popular Filipino folk songs from many regions of
the country. At the 1996 Katha Awards, the Glee Club won the Best Traditional Choir Music
Album Award for LAHI. It also won the best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance Award for
Lagi Kitang Naalala from the CD LAHI. The same song also won the Best Vocal Arrangement
for a Traditional Song for Prof. Navarro. LAHI was also nominated for the Album of the
Year Award. The third album in the trilogy is now being planned and will feature songs
celebrating the countrys glorious history. The Glee Club is the first ever
Philippine choir to record albums like these which were specifically conceptualized to
preserve and document the beauty and variety of Philippine songs.
In
October 1995, the choir had the honor of singing for the Holy Pope for the third time.
When it traveled to the Vatican with members of the Executive Band, the choir also
performed for audiences in Rome, Oslo and Madrid. Aside from its many return trips to
Guam, the Glee Clubs recent tours were a North American Tour in 1997 and a National
Tour in 1998. The Glee Club has also released "An Offering", a CD album
featuring international folk and religious songs.
On the last years tour through Europe became in
